Categories: Parenting Health & Wellness

In consultations with parents, I discuss many different things; one of those things is what products are being used on their baby's skin. I not only want my little clients to eat well, I want them to be healthy, strong and happy children and what personal care products are used can affect this. What many of my clients don't realize is the skin is very absorbent, it absorbs anything and everything we put on it. Children's skin is 30 percent thinner than adult's skin, absorbing greater amounts of chemicals from personal care products than an adult.

?In July and August of 2007, The Environmental Working Group surveyed more than 3,300 parents to find out what shampoos, lotions, bath soaps and other personal care products their children use. Based on the specific products named by these parents, they found children are exposed to an average of 61 different chemical ingredients every day, many of whichhave not been found safe for children by the government or the cosmetic industry?s expert safety panel.?

This is pretty scary?61 chemicals every day, chemicals that have not been found safe for our children, chemicals which may have long term health consequences for our children.

So what is a parent to do? Check out www.ewg.org/skindeep/childrens-products where you will find information on personal care products for children tested by The Environmental Working Group. Products are tested and rated, and parents can take a look to see what harmful ingredients may be lurking in the personal care products they are using on their children.

While it can be a little bit scary to look up the products you are using on your children, do it. There are far too many chemicals and toxins in many personal care products that are harmful to our children?s health. We need to take action to protect the health of our children and this is a great step to take. If the products you are using test well, you will put your mind at ease. If they don?t test well, then you can make some changes you will feel good about.
