From her many years of scientific observation of how children learn, Maria Montessori discovered that children have an almost effortless ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings and an almost tireless interest in manipulating the materials and world around them. She also discovered that children learn best naturally on their own, unassisted by adults, and when they were being actively engaged instead of simply being fed information.

Montessori learning generally follows the child’s curiosity rather than being directed to a specific subject at a specific time.  The teacher of a Montessori program acts as a facilitator of knowledge rather than the more traditional roll of administrator within the class.”
